            (1) To A––– Concerning Devotion to the Personal Jesus

 

            Spirit loq. You cling to the personal love of Christ Jesus your Divine Master, our Divine Master too. You say “Oh Sacred Heart, our Home lies deep in Thee.” But what you need chiefly is the fuller manifestation in your daily life [of the reality] that the Christ Spirit or Christ Heart, which distinguished Jesus of Nazareth from every other son of man, is verily your home, your accustomed haunt, your beloved goal.

You need to distinguish between the sentiment you cherish of a personal love for a personal Savior, which ministers to the well-being and present gratification of your personal affections, and that deeper clinging of the individual soul on its upward path, to the Spirit which was in Christ Jesus at all times, and which made Him what He was, and is, and ever shall be, the Savior of man from all which separates man from God, the Source and End of his existence.

            Abstract principles truly can never awaken love in man’s heart, because they are man-constructed, and they appeal in no wise to the Divine principle, or deep spiritual intuition of the Divine, which is the true “Heart” of man, and which was above all the “Sacred Heart” of Christ Jesus. The love which revealed itself in your Father’s manifestation to you of Christ Jesus your “Divine Master,” both “Divine” and “Master” in the full solution which shall be to man through him of all human mystery; “Divine” and “Master” in his transformation through love of mankind into Godhead; “Divine” and “Master” in that he spake never to man but of God, and of God’s holy presence within man’s soul, illuminating and transfiguring all man touches, all which should touch man: –

of this nature is the love ye all need. Such transcendent love in the Divine Father, such passion of love in the answering Son, in the Father conceiving, in the Son realizing their joint vision of a glorified Humanity, constitute what we have spoken of before as the Creative Love-Force, which wields the Universe of manifested life, ever expanding, ever impelling, ever ascending, destroying but to renew in higher form, concealing but to re-manifest more powerfully, suffering but to unfold into truest joys: – of such nature is the love ye must seek, if ye would realize the mystery of Godliness underlying your lives. This is what we would say to her.
