I.

Motive of the Society’s Formation

            THE Esoteric Christian Union represents the desire, as well, it is confidently believed, as the power, to meet that which is beyond all question the most urgent need of the times.

            This is the need – arising out of the demonstrated utter inadequacy of the presentments of religion and philosophy hitherto in vogue – for a system of thought, a rule of life, and an object of aspiration which, by their ability to satisfy absolutely man’s highest ideals, intellectual, moral, and spiritual, shall together constitute a perfect doctrine of existence, enabling him, by his genuine endeavour to observe it, to become the best that he has it in him to be, to the realisation of that which is, necessarily, the supreme desire of every sane and intelligent being, namely, the turning of his existence to the utmost account in the long run.
